US Youth Sailing Championship promises great competition

US Youth Sailing Championship - US Youth Sailing Championship promises great competition
PORTSMOUTH, R.I. USA-(4-6-2003) While some kids are getting ready for summer by brushing up on their camp songs and remembering how to set up a tent, others are busy training on the water on their sailboat, getting ready for the U.S. Youth Sailing Championship. The event, organized by US SAILING, will be held June 20-26 and is hosted by the Milwaukee Yacht Club in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Sponsors of the U.S. Youth Sailing Championship continue to demonstrate their strong support to encourage youth sailing: Vanguard Sailboats, West Marine, The Disney Company, and Gill.

The top 150 youth sailors, under the age of 20, from across the country race in Lasers and Club 420s at what is considered one of the premiere youth sailing events in the nation. They were selected from a list of more than 300 applicants based on sailing resumes.

Several awards will be presented at the conclusion of the event. The winner of the Laser class (singlehanded division) will receive the Robert L. Johnstone Trophy, recognizing the pioneering in community sailing and popularizing of one-design sailing for which Bob Johnstone is known. Johnstone was the creator of the Youth Championship and was the first committee chairman.

The Manton D. Scott Trophy (awarded to the winner of the Club 420 class) is named in honor of an aspiring Olympic sailor whose life was cut short prematurely -- he was electrocuted in 1973 when the mast of his boat made contact with an overhead power line. The David M. Perry Sportsmanship Trophy was dedicated in 1989. Sailors in each fleet are selected for this award by a vote of their peers. Dave Perry is a former committee chairman (1985-1989).
